Handlebar Conversion

Post by Moki »

Has anyone converted their Handlebars to Tubular (regular, old school) Handlebars?
I am acquiring a 2023 next and I KNOW I will need a different riding position.

There is a thread on here that shows what i brought and what was needed doing.
I never used my RT with the stock bars. But i love riding it with the GS bars and 40mm risers fitted.

I did mine last week with a yoke I bought on here - bars are a few inches wider as has been said in the other thread. I do not have the risers fitted and the standard mirrors are still fine for me.

Took it for spin on Friday, two up to the coast, and the extra leverage is like having power steering! I've just had a brand new set of Road 6 GTs fitted as well after some well worn 5 GTs which is probably contributing to the feeling of lightness.

The RT bar end weights do not fit GS bars so I got some Evotec Bar End Weights and these are beautifully made:

The RT has M8 bolts and the GS has M10 bolts holding the barend weights on.
What i did was use M8 helicoils threaded into the M10 holes.
This turned the M10 hole into an M8 hole and i was able to use my stock chrome barends.

I've had these on for a while now and completed a euro trip with them.

The bars I have are 830mm wide vs 730mm for the standard 'tiller'.

Once you are moving they are fine but very slow speed while loaded up, for example nose-to-tail traffic between the passports booths at Eurotunnel, it's difficult not to weave around.

I think I could cut the bars down around 30mm each side but then I would remove the threaded end and need new bar ends so my plan this weekend is to refit the original bars as I think they will be better for me overall.

I will take some photos to compare the relative positions for everyone on here though who is considering it.

For anyone who is interested, the standard bars sit slightly closer to the rider but I could have rolled the GS bars back to compensate for this. They do sit about 75mm higher and of course they are 100mm wider.

They do sit inside the width of the bike, the perspective on the top photo does make them look wider.

If you did want to cut them down you can remove around 30mm from each end and the threading goes a long way in, see the photo with the allen key to show the depth, so you can keep the bar end weights.

I've added a lot of photos for those that are interested in the difference.

I'll probably sell the kit now as I'm happy with the standard bars for my needs.

Please clarify for my small brain to comprehend. Do the stock OEM controls (front brake, clutch, etc.) work with the GS handle bar? Are the cables/hoses, etc. long enough? THANK YOU!
