Engine revs twist things to the right

Post by Nitesail »

Hello! New to the world of BMW motorcycles. Currently also have a ‘96 Honda Magna and have owned various bikes over the years, mostly Hondas, including the GW. My BMW is a 2006 1200RTP. Is it normal for this bike to twist a little to the right when revving it, even parked in neutral? Assuming it’s just the crankshaft doing its thing but just wanted to make sure this was normal on these. It’s pretty noticeable when riding and downshifting, it’ll lurch a little to the right. Thanks in advance.

Just got my new-to-me 2008 R1200RT last Saturday and I noticed quite a heavy movement of the engine (and hence the whole bike) when briskly revving in neutral. I am sure that is very normal (but do check the engine mounts, I suppose for excessive wear).
FWIW American muscle V8s do the same thing.

Longitudinal crankshaft is the cause - Guzzis do it too as does my car. I find it rather comforting.

To quote Dr T “That’s the charisma of a boxer engine”. Keep the revs over 3k and it should bumble along happily.

The ‘bouncing up and down on the ribs’ is not a term I recognise, however if you’re describing a somewhat lumpy tickover I’d suggest that you think what two horizontally opposed pistons are doing thumping from one side of the engine to the other. It vibrates, has a lumpy tickover, it’s as quirky as hell, and distinctly not ‘smooth as silk’ like an inline four cylinder engine but it’s got a character and charm all of its own. 👍

Think he means REVS. New plugs and injector balance may be needed
