The switched live (hot) is only on when the key is on.
+ve is an abbreviation for positive (live) and -ve negative (ground).
When the item that shows voltage and services two USB ports was plugged in, the voltage display "stayed on" even when the bike key was "off".
With the key off, try removing the item for a short while, plug is back in and the socket should be dead.

Re: simple wire color table
thanks. the bike is off now and has been all day. I'll plug in the voltage thing to the port on the left fairing and see if it lights up.
If that one is dead, then the inside one will be as well...and I can use the one on the inside as described.

------- 19:31 hrs .....
OK. you were absolutely correct! That voltage checking thing did NOT come on when plugged into the outside port on the fairing just under the left grip. That's what I'll use!

Re: simple wire color table
None of these options solve the problem for me. I want my ThunderBox power switch to come on when the ignition is switched on, and to stay on even during engine cranking.
Any auxiliary output controlled by the Canbus will shut off briefly during engine cranking which also prompts the ThunderBox to briefly shut off. The rear tail/brake light (grey/black/yellow wire) comes on with ignition switch and remains powered up during engine cranking, but unfortunately it runs at around 9v for tail light operation, and only hits 12v when the brake light is activated. Thunderbox needs to detect 12v. I am still looking for a wire to tap into that goes live with ignition and STAYS LIVE during engine start and then shuts off when ignition is off. Ideas anyone?

Re: simple wire color table
Low tech options...
#1
Wire direct to the battery posts with an On/Off toggle switch on the left fairing panel.
You would have to remember to turn it on and off, but you'd always have 12 volts.
#2
Try direct to battery with a "relay" switch connected to ... anything that is ON when the key is on. Even if that were 9V to the relay, your device woul still get 12V when the relay turns power on to your device.
Does a relay go ON when the trip-wire goes from 0V to 9V? I believe it does. I'm guessing the relay will remain ON even if trip-wire fluxuates from 9V to 12. All that time, your device has 12V... I think... have to test that.
I didn't know what a relay was until someone explained it in a post like this. I'm guessing most here know how they work...
If not, look into them. Read. The are useful for turning a separate circuit ON/OFF.
