Clutch/gearbox jumping under emergency braking.

Post by Roper424 »

So, I had a SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You) moment the other day - Well get off your damn phone and look RIGHT at a round about you absolute co*kwomble!!!

Anyway... Blind mini round about, looks clear, roll in slowly, old duffer shoots out in front, anchors deployed and THUD-THUD from the bottom front of the bike (could also feel it through my seat). I was too busy using 'sign language' at the driver to think much about it at that point, but later found a nice empty bit of road and tried again. Up to 60, mirrors, shoulder, anchors away THUD-THUD. Same 'double tap' noise, heavy thump through the seat and momentary rev jump. And thats it. I was able to keep riding it as everything settled in a split second and seemed none the worse. Very odd.

I'm not a mechanic, nor do I claim to be that way inclined. But in my mind it sounded and felt very much like the clutch slipping or gears disconnecting some how... Certainly something to do with getting power from the noisey bit through to the rubber bit at the back (see, I can talk mechanics!).

Just wondering if anyone else has heard/felt something similar under heavy braking - If you can explain in similarly technical langauge to what I've used, it'd be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
James.

Could it have been the ABS cutting in? That can be quite unerving if you have not experienced it before. If you were only using the front brake then the rear wheel may have lifted a little allowing it to spin up hence the revs increase

Hey bud.

Nah definitely wasn't that. One of the first things I do with any new car or bike is find out what the ABS feels like - Specifically so when it kicks in I know what I'm feeling and I don't panic or wonder what the heck is going on. This was a really heavy THUD from down low and between my legs.

Sounds like you've dropped a right bollock.

Have you checked your suspension recently, no oil emerging anywhere it shouldn’t? If you’ve lost your damping it could give those symptoms… I see from your earlier posts you’ve worried about this before. Could be time to bite the bullet!

I had it serviced after I posted about the suspension, and thankfully when they had a look at it in really good condition. I do keep an eye on it and so far so good (he says hoping it stays that way).

Sounds like you're not pulling the clutch in quickly enough or fully when coming to a stop.
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.
May the shaft be with you
