R1200RT TC (2011) Rear Brake Rotor Replacement
Hey all.
My 2011 K26 TC has 21.5K Miles on it, and is in the shop getting new tyres, and TPMS replacements (6 years... meh). Anyway, I get a call that the rear brake rotor is past minimum spec and should be replaced. I see previous posts indicating that usual rear disc wear is about 50-60K miles. Is it possible I need a new rear disc? I don't use the rear brake that much, other than the balancing. I think the bike is on 2nd set of pads (and they still have some left).
Along with this, I was not going to pay for an OEM rotor (crazy!). Anyone recommend EBC rotors? (and what is the model number?)

Thanks. I would typically do this replacement myself... but it happened to be in for inspection anyway.
I asked them to button it up... and I'll do brake rotors and pads myself, and take it back or elsewhere to finish my June inspection.
I would like to measure the rotor myself and see how close to 4.5mm I am.

I need to replace the rear disc (rotor) on my 2012 Camhead.
Has anyone had experience of doing this themselves. Did the bolts come out easily. BMW do like to use bolts that are micro-encapsulated with locking compound. Was any heat required to free the bolts off.
The bike has done 58,450 miles and the disc is down to the minimum wear limit.

Was it serviced at bmw dealer. They can be very cautious at measurments. Told me pads needed changing but only about 60% used . Changed my discs at 60,000 miles.

The service was at a BMW dealer, the disc thicknesses were highlighted on the free VHC. I have checked them myself with a micrometer and my measurements agree with those provided by the dealer.
~60,000 miles does seem to be about the average service life of the discs.

Changed the rear disc today, used some PlusGas, the bolts came out easily without any heat.
It's a PITA rotating the disc and locking it by putting the bike in gear to access one bolt at a time. Great care needs to be taken not to damage the paint on the FD unit. I used an extra long T40 torx bit with some T&E cable sheath around it. Also put some masking tape on the vulnerable area of the FD unit.
Found this video which may be of interest to others.
