Looking at purchasing a 2019 R1250RT ...any issues that I should be aware of?

Post by advnirvana »

I am going to look at a 2019 R1250RT with 45,000km.
It has had the recent 40km service done at the dealer.
I beleive this is the first year of the 1250. I was originally looking at a 1200 but the price for this R1250RT is in the range of a late model R1200.

Are there any issues that I should be aware of with this early model year of the 1250. Any tips or suggestions ?

I previously owned a 2011 R1200RT, R1200GSA, and currently have a K1600...so I am a bit familiar with BMW.

Thanks

Hi

Just take it for a test ride. Make sure everything works. Change the ride mode make sure the damping changes. Check the rear suspensions moves freely they get a lot of road much thrown at the bottom pivots. Rear calipers have a tendancy to stick if not maintained so one pad wears quickly.

Finish can be a problem with corrosion around the front pan and swing arm but that is consmetic more than anything however it can allow water ingress on the drive shaft tunnel.

Prodction of the 1250RT actually started in September 2018 and mine was registered in the UK to a BMW dealer in early October (who I assume used it a demo bike and the registration documents show they kept it for a couple of months before selling it to a customer with just over a 1,000 miles on the clock).

In terms of any issues associated with it being an early model, absolutely none. Asides from the usual servicing, the only thing I've needed was to replace was an oil seal on the drive shaft bevel housing that started to weep slighty at about 30k miles, even the headlight bulbs, which historically many have said theirs go regularly are the originals.

There was a recall done a couple of years ago, 1/ to replace the circlips that hold the footpegs pins in place; and 2/ a softwear update to the way the dashboard notifies you of an issue with ESA failure, plus of course there's the well documented drive shaft replacment program.

Subject to the usual checks, if anything ever happened to mine I wouldn't have any problems replacing it with a similar early build model.

That’s a solid bike. Early 1250s were generally good, i owned one before and the shift cam motor was reliable overall. You might want to make sure everything’s been maintained properly also check if it's had all the dealer services and recalls done.
