Ouch! I did the same about a month ago, but I was forewarned with an unrequested estimate by BMW when they did the shaft last year, at just under £1k for the discs/pads/labour alone.

Fortunately over the next few months I found a new pair of Brembo front discs for sale on another forum, and bought a new BM rear disc on offer on eBay. Brembo pads from Sportsbike shop, and the tyres I bought early in preparation for our annual tour, so they were all sat in the garage waiting for fit on the next service (a minor one thank goodness) with our local independent.

Overall the total cost inc service was only slightly more than BMW wanted for the brakes, which was still a bit of a hit although spreading the cost made it a little less painful… but don’t the brakes feel good now?!

My problem was that the guy I bought the bike off had wavy discs fitted, and I asked my independent servicing guy why the front brake was pulsating badly. He found that the discs were a millimetre thicker than the BMW standard discs, which was preventing the floating action when hot, so I asked him to put all three back to standard.

As for the tyres, they were squared off and I didn't think there would be enough tread on the front to last my next trip, which will be in the region of 2000 miles up and around Scotland, so again, I got them changed now when in all honesty, they could have done me a good few weeks longer.

The bike had been home serviced for the last two years by the previous owner, and I wanted peace of mind. My guy gave it a thorough going over during the service, and got the software updates all installed. Everything all right now, especially with the proper oil in the shaft, rather than the automatic transmission oil that he discovered.

Bike runs like it should - a dream.

Came to hospital today for the removal of the granuloma (?) on my vocal cords. Woke up about 1.5 hours later from anesthesia. Have to stay at hospital overnight, though.


They wheeled me from recovery to women's ward for rest of the stay. Maybe it is a BMW thing?

My mechanic sent me some update:

Oh yuk.

My mechanic called to let me know that the bike is ready and he will drop it at my house tomorrow.

Labour around 2000,- e and parts around 500,- e or so. Considering that I paid 2600,- for the bike one might ask what is the point if there is any.

The point for me is that now I know exactly what the bike is made of and that various old/original things that might leave me stranded are now replaced or otherwise taken care of. And that the mess done in the past by previous people have now been corrected as well.

I think I will go and buy a new battery while at it. Should get RT on the road on Sunday weather permitting.

Got the new PR6 GT’s fit, ready for its annual euro trip, the last pair having done 9400 miles and probably over 1k left on them.
Gave it a good wash, just to give it a polish, and he’s good to go, not looking bad for over 46k miles, and 9 years old in September

I'm on 68k—low mileage for an 18-year-old girl.

Just returned from having a lengthy test ride on a Ural outfit. Where my old one maxed out at 45mph, I got up to a steady 85mph on the M2. The engine noise reminded me of my old R80. Told the salesman I hadn't ridden an outfit for years. Half an hour later, I had the chair in the air along a dual carriageway. He went a funny shade of green very quickly
Fully loaded, the cost is around 27kfor a gear up model. That was the only minus. I said if he can find me a used one for around the 20k, I might be interested.
