At the risk of teaching Granny…

The seat on my ST1300 was one if the most uncomfortable I’d ever ridden, and I’d be shuffling around within the first hour of a 4-5 hour ride.

First I bought Sargent seats, which are (perversely) more firm than stock and also wider.

I also looked at underwear, (not a subject to be discussed before breakfast) and found that wrongly sited seams or loose fitting undies that wrinkle up can make you feel like you’re sitting on red hot chicken wire after a while, especially on motorways where you’re just sat in one position for hours.To this end I bought some LD boxer type shorts from the US which were quite expensive but certainly helped.

The combination of the two allied with comfort breaks every hour or so have almost resolved the dreaded butt burn.

In regard to cycling shorts, I found the elasticated material helps but the padding/chamois is in the wrong place, which it would be if you think how you sit on a bicycle saddle… mind you, the first saddle on my push bike felt more like a razor blade before I changed it!

The problem with cycle shorts is that if you ever have an accident you can't explain them

I've had Tony mak ea seat for me before, but it was not much better then the original, the only ones I've had made which were good were by RDL, but they are such a pain to get here in the UK with the two way shipping adding a couple of hundred $s to the price.

I'll bite the bullet and buy a new Sargent seat and see how I get on.

I have a 2025 R1250RT and was thinking of getting the Sargent seat for it. Did you get one, and if so, how do you find it compared to the stock one?

Russell Daylong. The only seat that works for me. When you add on postage sending your seat to America, and the same to return it, mine worked out at about £550. That included keeping the heating elements in.

A lot of money, but you only have to pay it once. I've just had 4 consecutive 12 hour/500 mile days and no discomfort at all.

I went down various rabbit holes in the past, with trying gel inserts, Corbin, Sergeant etc etc., and just kept paying lots of money for something that still didn't cut it in the comfort stakes.

That's why, if I intend keeping a touring bike for three years or more, I get a Russell Daylong for it.

£500ish isn't a lot to spend when you know for certain it's going to be comfortable, and you can sell them when you've finished. People in the long distance community will snap your hand off for a second hand RDL for £350. That's why they hardly ever get put on eBay.
