BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

Good day folks, I am looking for some recommendations / guidance on engine bars for my 2013 RT.

Looking on-line there are many options some of which look to be more for appearance than protection. Having never fitted bars to an RT I'm wondering what people's experiences have been and can you help my decision.

Can I please ask:

Manufacturer of bars you have fitted;
Quality of the materials (I appreciate that can be subjective);
Ease of fit;
Would you buy again.

On my GS, I dropped it at a fuel station. It had engine bars, BMW's version. I still had a scuff marks on my valve cover.

On my RT, to avoid it happening again, I have put BMW's protective valve cover on, instead of engine bars. Easier to fit and much lighter as well.

I am the same when I had my GSA however the RT (2013) is new to me. It does come with a protective valve cover but just wasn't sure if that would be enough.

I also have the plastic BMW valve cover on my 2011 model, they work well in a minor drop.

Same for me on my 2012 model.

I have a set of Wunderlich Cheap Chinese copies from Ail Express fitted. They even come with the Wunderlich fitting sheet. The fitting was straight forward and them are well made. I've dropped the bike a couple of times and they do what they are meant to. No dents of rust showing after 3 years. They are about £150 a set.
I also have the plastic head guards fitted. Just because I couldn't be bothered to remove them.

Thank you Doctor T, i'm looking at options and whilst 'don't drop it' is best option we never know what's around the corner.
