World tour and services

I am considering taking a very long tour during retirement. Sort of like how Ewan McGreggor did during his tours. I plan on doing North and South America, North Africa, Europe, and South/East Asia. Has anyone ever done this and have any tips? Are there certain places that have decent services for BMW bikes if needed (i would do my own oil changes and valve checks)? Obviously I would avoid dangerous areas when applicable and do research on areas to avoid before going. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
