How much? (Not what brand)

I was watching a YouTube video on how to change the oil on a r1200rt.
The presenter seemed to fill it up, check the oil window, then fill some more.
Isn't there a set amount you KNOW goes in after you drain it? What is that amount?

The Rider's Manual gives an engine oil capacity of max. 4.0 l, with filter change.

As your never going to get all the oil out, you always fill to the window, run the bike then check the window again. The amount of oil the engine holds as per the manual is from a dry point, not a bike that's had oil in and run/ridden.
I do the above(as the majority on this site do)then check again after a decent run.

I agree with the above, recently I supplied a BMW dealer with 4 l of oil and they only used ~3.5 l. The oil level was halfway between min & max.

Gentlemen,
Thank you. I figured it had to be about 4.0.
I'm new to the BMW 1200, but I've put 125,000 miles plus on a Yamaha FJR.
Thank you for that advice.

Those BMW service procedures can be a bit different from Japanese bikes. The 4.0L is spot on, and the "fill to the window, run, and check" method is pretty standard with these boxers. Welcome to the BMW world - that FJR experience will serve you well. Enjoy the new machine!

I'm enjoying the smooth twin feel of the BMW.
It's not as fast as the FJR (0 to 60), but I admire the build quality and engineering.
Getting the plastic off the FJR is dismal compared to the BMW!
I've had to learn what a "CANBUS" is ... not related to "Cannibus" as I guessed... hmmm....
I'm replacing the incandescent bulbs with LED and knowing to order "canbus compatible" made that a lot easier. I won't have to add resistors as I thought I might. (of course, I have a mound of packages to return to Amazon now!)
On a personal note, I've wanted to throw my leg over a BMW ever since reading William Pirsig's book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
It took 50+ years to get to that moment, but I'm loving life on the R1200RT.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'll open a new thread about the LED bulbs and adding the brake light strip.
