Hello all,

I'm new to the group having not long picked up a lovely 2005rt. On a recent ride the bike cut out on me and I had to be recovered home - not a great start!! Having researched a little and watched some videos I think it was down to the Fuel Pump Control Unit as this appeared to be only allowing the pump to prime now and again when I tried it at home. I watched a video and bypassed the pump to check if the engine would start (as I have ordered a new control unit) by alas it turns over but appears to be starved of fuel (I could hear the pump spining). I though possibly the pump may have gone so have received a new ne today and fitted it but it still not firing up. The pump spins (like the old one) but no fuel is being pumped out (I think).
I've taken the pump apart and flushed through, no obvious blockages found. I've reassembled but still no joy?

Any advice appreciated?
Cheers

Hi Evanst279,
you said the bike cut out, but you haven't said you have tested for spark, just focused on the fuel delivery.
And even then you said "but no fuel is being pumped out (I think) " sounds like you need to do some eliminating.
Try;
1) Check for spark - remove any spark plug lead and spark plug, plug lead back into removed spark plug, hold threaded part of plug against engine and turn engine over as if to start, is there a spark at plug gap when turning engine over? No - check coil - connector contacts clean and secure>
Yes for spark - proceed to fuel. (not sure if the 05 rts had the twin spark plugs, but check all)

2) Fuel - To check fuel is spraying (under pressure from fuel pump) out of fuel injectors -
Remove fuel injectors one at a time ensuring you do not remove the fuel line or power lead to the injector, just wriggle out after clamp off, only an "O" ring sealing it. Then working with one injector at a time, hold injector against something flat, I used an old pizza box, cardboard is good, hold injector at an edge of cardboard and aiming towards the other end of the cardboard, get a helper to turn engine over as if to start it, fuel should then spray out from injector across the cardboard. Do not turn engine over unless injector connector wire is connected to injector, I read it could damage computer.
Be aware the fuel line to the injector is under pressure, suggest wear safety glasses when testing. (I did not remove fuel line when I tested mine)
Yes - fuel spraying out both injectors, proceed to timing and so on...
No - fuel not spraying out of injectors - fit your new fuel pump (and fuel filter)

Many thanks for your comment, there is a lot of useful advice there so I really appreciate it. I'll take another look at it next week and follow the advice. I'll keep you posted.
