Hissing scraping sound from rear

Hello All

My new 2013 RT is wonderful in every way except for a hissing or metallic scraping sound from the rear. It is only audible above around 30mph and after the bike is warmed up and with visor open.

It sounds like dragging rear brakes and applying the brakes increases the sound but I think that is actually a separate sound. Bike has just had a major service at a reputable BMW specialist where I mentioned this. The final drive oil was clean and there is no play in the rear wheel. The garage said the final drive is fine. Rear disc and pads have been replaced and the sound is still there.

My last RT( 2006 ) never made this noise. I had a final drive failure before and this is different.

Could it be this is just what later FDs sound like?

Has anyone noticed this?

Many thanks.

That sound is not normal. You should investigate and find the source. Mine makes no noticeable sound at all, at any speed.

Hi thank you

I have found the source of this now. Embrassingly not actually from the rear but from the front. Raising the bike and spinning the front wheel showed it up immediately as front pads rubbing on the discs. Underway it sounds very much as if its from the rear. Backing off the pads eliminates the noise. ( Care if road testing like this as front brakes need to be pumped a few times before having any effect.)!

So very happy I only have a caliper servicing job rather than anything more serious.

Leaving the post up in case it helps anyone not sure of the source of a noise like this.
