BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

New to the forum. Giving a 2012 R1200RT a new home. Working through first service with change of all fluids, final drive lube, cleaning etc... Own two others as well. a 1996 R1100GSA and a 1974 R100/75. GS was brought back to life last year with new head gaskets and general service. R100/75 is a long term project that hasn't begun yet. :-) Retired now and have more time to spend in the garage.

Thanks for the Welcome Dr. T. Looking forward to the arrival of 4 NGK Spark Plugs, Air Filter, Alternator Belt and a GS-911 device in the next few days to finish off a what I like to think of as a new owner service so I have confidence (no records of previous services) when I head out to get some miles behind me on the RT. Learning a lot already and the difference between a 74, 96 and 2012 boxer motor is interesting to discover.

Thanks for the welcome! Been a minute since I last logged on. Working through all the kinks. Most of the service is done, working on electrics and light now with a few burned out bulbs. Not going to upgrade to LED until after I get experience in changing out regular. Lots of good videos out there. Found something interesting out. Got a cheap metal key for bags and seats (Dealer quote for a new programmed key was a little out my range at the moment). Took it to local Ace Hardware where they cut it for free. Works great in bags and seat. Here's the interesting thing. It's not programmed (no chip), but if I take the broken backup plastic key and tape it to the new metal key, works like a charm. Bike starts, runs, no "Check EWS" message. Not that I'm going to attempt a long tour with that setup, but was fun to find out in an emergency, I could get it to function. Saving my pennies for a real key from dealer. Small price to pay (as someone else in the forum has said..) in relationship to total investment.
