BMW R1200RT/R1250RT Forum

2010 R1200RT, today was the first time since I got the bike a month ago where I was in stop and go traffic and as I watched the temp gauge go up I wonder how high is too high and when should I pull over and shut down if I can’t get moving faster.

Like the fuel gauge there are 3 tick marks (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) below the temp symbol.
Full fuel is right below the fuel symbol, am I correct that if the temp bar ever approaches right below the temp symbol (“full”) above 3rd tick it’s time to shut down a bit? I got to just below the 3rd tick (3/4) and then thankfully traffic cleared. No other warning lights.

IMO, below the 3rd tick (3/4) doesn't sound abnormal. Looking at the BMW Rider's Manual, there are no other warnings linked to the oil temperature. If this was deemed by BMW to be critical, like oil pressure and/or level, perhaps additional warning might have been provided.

What is the engine oil viscosity range and is the level correct.

If the oil temperature is of real concern, could always retrofit an RT-P oil cooler fan, https://www.bmwlt.com/threads/over-heat ... fic.49579/

Thanks. Puts my mind at ease. Viscosity is whatever the manual calls for and level is correct. Bike was a single owner bought and serviced at the same dealer till a month ago.

The current BMW recommended viscosity range is 15W-50. The Rider's Manual gives 5 different ranges, none of which are 15W-50.

It's also semi-synthetic when fully synthetic maintains its' viscosity better at higher temperatures.
