Reviews on Oil

Post by Colpat »

Hi Guys I am in Australia so it can get very hot in the summer, just about to change the engine oil on my 2007 1200 RT I was thinking of using Motul 7100 15W50 synthetic engine oil... anyone have a view on this oil ?

I've supplied Motul 5100 15W-50 semi-synthetic to a BMW dealer and they were quite happy to use it. This oil meets the current specifications of the BMW (made by Shell) branded stuff.

Yesterday, I was at a local oil supplier and they confirmed that fully synthetic can be used in my 2012 Camhead. BMW would use the same spec. oil in a 2007 Hexhead.

(Recently used Motul oil in my 1980 Yamaha XJ650, IMO, it's a decent brand).

Hi David,

So you would recommend Motul 7100 15-50w fully synthetic over the BMW semisynthetic product ?? it's just that no one I can find has used it previously

In 2010 when I bought my first Camhead, BMW were using Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T 10W-50 fully synthetic. For some reason, (unknown to me), BMW changed their oil spec. to 15W-50 semi-synthetic.

Fully synthetic oil "maintains its viscosity better in extreme temperatures". Therefore, IMO, yes I would recommend using fully synthetic oil, the brand is personal choice.

Recently, Shell oil was recommended to me. I've bought their Advance 15W-50 Ultra 100% Synthetic. This will be supplied to the BMW dealer for the next service. (On a BMW invoice for a 1250 GS service, it said "Shell" oil was used).

In 2007 when I bought my first BMW, a Hexhead, they were using 20W-50 mineral oil.

Motor oil is a tricky topic. Everyone has an opinion on what is best. Just about any synthetic will work as long as it meets JASO requirements.(if the bike has a wet clutch)

Than you for the Oil discussion.
I agree with Randyjaco Any synthetic that is compactable with a wet clutch.

I checked my repair receipt and my shop used Motul 7100 20W-50 4t for the last engine oil change. Also LiquidMoly gear oil 75W-90 for transmission. This shop handles only BMW bikes. I ordered Motul 7100 15W-50 for the next time. Only thing not working on my 06 RT is the fuel tank strip, so my research led me to the Fuel Sensor Tech replacement.
Is this the best fix or what has worked for other owners?
Lastly, is there any high flow air filters that are recommended such as a K & N, which I use on all my 4 wheeled vehicles.
Thanks
