2009 R1200RT clutch slipping.

Post by Tailored »

Today I noticed a fair bit of slipping when trying to accelerate. Accompanied by the lovely smell of burning clutch when the slipping was most clear.

Although I've done minor maintenance tasks (oil change, changed the fuel pump and breather hose, brake fluid bleed, installed new tires) on this still-fairly-new-to-me-bike, my understanding is that the clutch is a major endeavor that involves stripping the bike then splitting it in half. So I'm wondering if anyone has some useful links regarding finding the right parts, and ideally, a walkthrough on how to replace it. My overall situation (300 miles to the nearest dealer, and not exactly made of money anyway) means that my choices are DIY it, or get rid of the whole bike, and I don't want to get rid of it.

Any helpful info is appreciated.

Mileage? What's the level of the fluid in the master cylinder?

57k miles, I'm the third owner.
I did look in the master cylinder, and the dark green liquid inside is nearly full. I heard that you need to remove some, but I couldn't tell how much to remove (and couldn't see any markings on the inside to show me the min/max) so I haven't done that yet.

Is there a marking inside to look for?

I ordered a clutchplate and some magura blood (hopefully enough!, the bottle for single use is tiny). Anyone here that has done this repair, I'd appreciate your info on what else I'll need to do this. (aside from time, patience, luck, etc)

Replaced clutch on my 2010 RT with 95,000 miles on it about 2 years ago. Sourced clutch kit from Euro Motoelectrics our of Denver. Was not an extremely technical job, just time consuming with a lot of disassembly required. It would have taken me a weekend, 2-3 days to do, but was a bot longer as I had a repair made to rear frame that required an extra week. Label parts, label connectors, take lots of photos and even videos as you disassemble so yu can get it all back together. I used ziplock bags to put fasteners and parts in with labels and used painters masking tape to label connectors and wires. I had a Haynes manual with some instructions and torque specs. A second or third person can help, especially with removal of rear subframe. I've seen some leave wheel and swingarm in place on frame but I removed when separating from front. There are some videos out there that give some instruction and maybe not all he steps but an overview of what needs to be done. The only special tool I needed that I didn't have was a clutch disc centering tool, but I think Haynes give you an alternative homemade tool you can use as I recall.

I've heard that you need new bolts, but other people say you can reuse them.

Did you get new clutch bolts? If so, do you recall where you got them?

I don't recall, but they may have been included in the kit from EuroMotoelectrics if I replaced them.
