What can I put down a barrel to stop it and the piston becoming stuck over winter.Is there a specific oil that does the job or just a matter of any old oil,thanks.

My 1980 Yamaha XJ650 Owner's Manual recommends the following. Pour about 15ml of the correct viscosity engine oil in each cylinder.

The 2012 BMW R1200RT Rider's Manual doesn't mention putting oil in the cylinders.

I don't bother on either bike. The RT is usually stood for 5 months, the XJ650 can be less, neither has seized up.

Thank you for the replys.I should have been clearer, this is for my Lambretta. I'll put some 2 stroke oil down it then.

It's a brand new piston/barrel.Never been run and the money I've spent is eye-watering.Me garage isn't the warmest place so I want to pre empt any issues over winter. Here's another 1 for you.The scooter has a SS long range petrol tank that's never had fuel in it,thoughts on preventing any internal corrosion,I don't really want it sat there with a full tank of petrol.

if the tank is a decent quality of stainless steel then it should be OK

But you could easily coat it again with 2 stroke oil for peace of mind then flush it out next year

I had thought of that but its a bugger of a tight fit getting it in and out

Both my motorcycles are stored with fuel tanks brimmed with petrol. One is steel, the other is plastic.

On the XJ650, I used to drain it and add a cup full of engine oil, shake the tank to thoroughly coat the internal surfaces.

I dont think you are supposed to stick that in there

The engine fitters in the RAF used to say 'A full tank is a safe tank' It's the vapour that ignites so the less room the less vapour.
