Oil Level Sensor

My 2010 RT has lately been showing a strange problem.
Sometimes I can see the OK on the oil level on the dashboard computer, other times, no matter how long I wait, it never goes past 3 dashes.
Just yesterday it worked fine several times, but this morning, after 30km commute to work, when I stopped the bike upright with the side stand retracted, it never showed OK.
I'm considering replacing the oil level sensor, it doesn't seem like a difficult job.
Does anyone know if it could be something other than the oil level sensor?
Is this a common fault?
Has anyone had the same problem?
