New bike. Couple of questions

Post by Stu9000 »

I recently bought a r1200rt. Year 2007. 34k miles. Navy blue.
Im pretty happy with it, but as we get to know each other i am uncovering the inevitable niggles. If you don't mind id like to get your thoughts so I can either fix it, hassle the bike shop, or contact a bmw dealer. 1st choice is always for me to fix it.

The biggest concern is there is a slight oil misting on the rear axle. Its not bad, but is it likely to get worse?

I like to think of myself as reasonably OK with DiY but from what I've read various special tools are needed to replace the seal. Its not dripping. No oil seems to be getting to the wheel or disk. What do you think?

At some point I'll drop the final drive to change the oil and inspect the universal joint. But there is no excessive play when in gear and on centre stand. No clonking. So im hoping it is fairly normal.

Annoyingly, the fuel guage stopped reading correctly after a month of ownership. It reads full. Then, with 180 miles on the trip it reads 3/4 full. As I get past 200 miles it shows as half full. It was still reading about half full when the bike ran out of petrol in the fast lane of the M4. My guess is the garage or previous owner did the lighter clicker trick. I might have a go myself. But could I make it worse? Id rather it read as full and just use the trip to monitor how much fuel i have left than have an alert triangle on the dash. I guess I could splash out on a new sensor strip, but £160 seems pricey, fitting looks fiddly, ish, and they don't always last as a fix from what I've read.

The bike seems a little underpowered for a 1200 twin. My last bike was a triumph sprint gt. It was a missile with an incredible engine. Some bikes want to go fast and tbh im happy to be on something that is a bit calmer. The bmw can cruise comfortably wafting along at 80 ish with little effort. But it does not leap off the lights. Maybe its tuned differently. Maybe I need to check the air filter. It does not sound clicky so im not in a hurry to get the feeler gauge out. Im jist a little surprised it isn't more tourqey at lower speeds.

I think the bike looks gorgeous. Its super comfy. The screen is great as are thr panniers. I think I made the right decision. But buying bikes at the lower end of the price range comes with a few wrinkles to iron out, hence this post.

I am sorry, but I have almost nothing to add here. New BMW owner myself. I have seen videos on YouTube about rebuilding the final drive. That may help. Other than asking if there is some sort of breather in the housing I would suspect a leaking seal or o-ring.

Thank you for the yt video. This is exactly what I needed. I have ordered the outer seal, paste and oil. Fingers crossed I can sort this out soon. Much appreciated.
