Re: Mexico 2026
If you go beyond Baja or Northern Sonora, you need a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit and a six month tourist visa...both are available at the biggger border crossings.

Mexico 2026
I got back from Mexico on March 1st. I left Berkeley, CA on January 6. This is my fifth recorrido, third time on the Beemer. I crossed both ways at Mexicali and went down and came back through Sonora and Sinaloa, mostly on the boring highway #15. One of the destinations is always to visit an old ...

Re: 2010 RT - in search of a replacement front wheel...
there you go, thanks! €970 = $1077...I guess I should just spring for a new one. (hmm...better check on shipping)
I probably should replace the front bearings, seals and the bolts holding the brake rotors at the same time. One other little question, don't the front bearings usually come as pairs ...

Re: 2010 RT - in search of a replacement front wheel...
thanks, but they're all listed as "used". Seems to me there's a high probablity that a random, used wheel is as bad (or worse) than mine.

Re: 2010 RT - in search of a replacement front wheel...
I want to bump this thread. I have had my front wheel repaired twice and I am increasingly dubious about it. A new one is $1700+ here in the US...it seems to me that there must be a better price in Europe where there are more RT's. Does anyone have a link to a European (or maybe UK or non EU) shop ...

Repairing cast wheels
I've dinged up my front wheel on my last two trips in Mexico. Here's what it looked like in March when I got back.

Both times I had it straightened at a shop in Walnut Creek where they did a lot of heating with a gas torch. I imagine BMW did some kind of post fabrication heat treatment ...

Re: Mexico trip report
I-5 to San Diego, then 94 the last little bit over to Tecate. On the way back, I crossed at Mexicali and came back on I-10, then on 5.

Wheel straightening
I just got back from two months in Mexico on my 2009 R1200RT. I dinged up the wheel kind of horrendously on a couple of piche baches. Here's a photo. It's at the shop now. They previously straightened it after last year's trip (not as bad). My question is, does heating and straightening these cast ...

Mexico trip report
I just got back from about two months in Mexico. This is my fourth year to make the trip. The first two on my old Honda ST1300 (not an excellent Mexico bike) and the last two on my 2009 R1200RT, "Che". The route was basically from SF Bay area down the Pacific coast of Mexico to Puerto Escondido ...

Re: Mexico: R1200RT vs old Honda ST1300
yeah, that V4 takes up all the space between your legs and there's basically no where for the heat to go except up. I was grateful for that extra heat about half the time last year. This year on the RT, I was cold all the way to about Tampico. For sure, if the air temperature got over 95F I had to ...

Mexico: R1200RT vs old Honda ST1300
I've ridden through Mexico the last three years. '22 and '23 on my old 2003 Honda ST1300, which, in retrospect, was not really suitable for the roads. In October I bought a new (2009) RT. I've ridden about 7-8 thousand miles per trip. This year I took the new bike from Berkeley, CA down the east ...

Re: In Mexico with a "check oil" message
No oil pressure light... so there is some oil level float switch. Maybe it's just stuck or something. I will maybe try an oil change, see if fresh oil helps it

In Mexico with a "check oil" message
I'm currently in Isla Mujeres. My 2009 has been great for the last 3000+ miles aside from a burst fork seal from the pinche topes. The (as yet nameless) RT had fresh oil and filter before I left, but I got a disturbing "check oil" message en route yesterday across the top of Yucatan from Merida. Oil ...

Fork seal in Mexico
I blew a fork seal today (2009 R1200RT). I can see how it happened on the wretched (topes, truck convoys, no sholder, greasy wet pavement, potholes) crta. 180 before the Isla del Carmen bridge. (Really, an hour and a half of the worst, bumpiest, ruttiest, greasiest road...so many trucks, so many ...
