Replace bmw nav device with phone mount

Post by Strat Tuner »

Can I replace the bmw nav device with a phone mount?
    2008 r1200rt

Ideally, the phone mount would plug in just as bmw's device and the phone mount would then draw power for the phone over usb plug.

I've searched with Google and found it for the latest r1250 ( I think?) , but how do I get this for the 2008 bike?

    Link to item?

Thank you in advance for any help. :-)

Search for Wunderlich and Touratech. They do them for later models.

And the good folks at touratech write...

    "Hello,
unfortunately we do not have a suitable adapter or bracket and for this reason we cannot offer a suitable solution
    kind regards from Germany, Marco
Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Kind Regards
    i.A. Marco Kempf
    TOURATECH GmbH"

If the bracket I ordered doesn't fit (and it shouldn't since it's for a later r1200) it's time to make my own!

    1. That cable that feeds it carries 12 volts. Cut it.
    2. Patch in a female power outlet and plug in a 2 port usb adapter. (Like the one you'd use in a car power outlet)
    3. Fabricate cell phone holder to fit metal base. Done that before.
    4. Remove existing garmin bracket. Attach fabricated holder.
    5. Place phone in new holder. Connect to usb power.

Could end up looking pretty home made. Maybe power coupling should be inside huge front cowling?

    It's project time! :-)

It looked immaculate. Better than show room.
    111,000 miles showing. $2,500.00. Sold!

I'm hoping to nurse it to 200,000 miles.

Is there anything from Quadlock that suits your requirements?
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

I have one coming from Amazon.

I have a 2nd on the way. (Willis brand) This one looks like it should clip in just like the garmin nav 5 does.
    That would be ideal.
It would replace the garmin, surface two usb ports, and hold my cell phone in place.!
    Here's hoping!

I removed the Navigator V from my 2013 RT and replaced it with a Quadlock. Much simpler using my iPhone (in my humble opinion) and a fraction of the cost. I've kept the Navigator wiring and secured it behind the dash should it ever be required.

Big fan of Quadlock and have had zero problems on 3 different bikes :thumb:

I settled on this item from Amazon.
    Image
willis Motorcycle Phone Mount for BMW R1200GS, Mobile Phone Holder with Dual USB Charging Ports for BMW ADV F700 800GS R1250GS,GPS Navigation Bracket

Willis makes two versions: one for the shallow 1200 connection and a deeper/thicker one for the 1250 connector.
It surfaced two usb ports. It draws power from the existing mount. It was literally "plug and play".
