The switched live (hot) is only on when the key is on.

+ve is an abbreviation for positive (live) and -ve negative (ground).

When the item that shows voltage and services two USB ports was plugged in, the voltage display "stayed on" even when the bike key was "off".
With the key off, try removing the item for a short while, plug is back in and the socket should be dead.

thanks. the bike is off now and has been all day. I'll plug in the voltage thing to the port on the left fairing and see if it lights up.
If that one is dead, then the inside one will be as well...and I can use the one on the inside as described.

OK. you were absolutely correct! That voltage checking thing did NOT come on when plugged into the outside port on the fairing just under the left grip. That's what I'll use!
