Get NEW KEY made ??

Post by Strat Tuner »

How does one go about getting a new key made?

I found the BMW blank on Amazon, and my local key shop made a key copy from that.

Apparently, BMW keys use an electronic chip, so my new key won't work ... yet...

My guess is the Amazon blank DOES NOT have a chip, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

How do you all get a new key made, and what does it cost?
Thanks in advance,

I’ve bought both from BMW ready cut.

From memory a non-chip key ready cut for your bike from BMW wasn’t expensive, somewhere around the £15-£20 mark?

The ‘keyless’ transponder key was over £200.

I had a 'dumb' key made last year to save potential damage on my keyless fob when I need to use it on the seat, panniers etc. The price last summer was near enough £25 inc Vat. For security reasons you cannot order the key online (well in the UK you can't) and you have to both go into a dealer (with your log book and the usual ID) to order & collect it. That's a bit of a pain if your dealer isn't local, but it is the key for your bike so it's not an unreasonable security measure. It took three or four working days from ordering to be ready to collect. I guess the procedure for a coded key is the same, albeit more expensive.

Note. You don't need to leave a key with them to copy as the key's cut profile is recorded along with your bikes build history at BMW HQ.

Here in the states, a replacement key for my 2014 RTP is $120 from the dealer. I may try to get an Amazon blank as a backup to hide on the bike as the price is right.

The San Diego BMW Motorcycle shop was happy to order a key made for me

Cost: $130.00 US dollars OR 103 British Pounds.

That's as of February 22, 2025.

NB: I had to produce:
- registration
- driver's license
- pink slip (owner's certificate)
- VIN # (apparently that is the code used to produce a unique key)
