Sputtering R1250RS

Post by Dennis the menace »

Hi all ,I am new to this site.I have a problem with my 2020 R1250RS, she started sputtering really bad at 4000rpm almost like some one stuffed a potato in the tail pipe.Seems maybe related to when she reaches reserve. She has 20k miles on her and has been flawless until now.I don't believe it's the sparkplugs because it doesn't happen all the time. But they are the original ones.Any thoughts ?Dennis

Original as in never been changed?

If so then change them I'm pretty sure they are 12k service interval and these engines are heavy on the plugs

Ok guess I will have to change them, just seems weird that they would have the effect that I am experiencing. Its almost like the ignition is turning off at 4000rpm and she cuts in and out.But no dash warning or mil light. Going to see with my moto scan app if there are any codes.I was hoping someone would have experienced the same symptom.

As Stu said, change the plugs.I had exactly the same symptoms on my RT1200 after I has the PowerCommander fitted. After a change of plug, all good. Then I sold it

I have had something similar and it was caused by the plugs and I change mine every 12k.

I'm not saying it will fix it but they need to be changed so get everything in order first before chasing it

Ok hi everyone, I changed the plugs, and you guys are correct one of them the left cylinder the center electrode was almost completely gone! These bike do eat plugs, must be the high compression or the swirling cubustion. So I didn't think the plugs alone were my problem, the bike is still sputtering really bad.So I am going to change the coils .The bike had this ghost problem before everyone now and than she would hiccup for just a second. Like someone turned off the spark.I think the coils are toast from all the heat where they are located. There's no way to bench test them other than checking the resitince of the 2 outermost pins.I can't believe I paid $73 for 2 sparkplugs from local dealer.I found some coils from Euro Moto Electric for have the price that the dealer wants . Wish me luck trying to get my baby back and running good!Dennis Oh PS no codes after checking with my scanner

Usually if it's the coils you get an error code on that cylinder and swapping the coils causes the error to move to the other cylinder

Is there not anyone local that will allow to borrow their coils to test rather than spend money?

Ok here's the update, turns out it was the coil!! Put two new ones that I got from EuroMoto Electric and she runs tops again!! Think it was the right side because that plug was totally gone the tip was off.So the coil had to work harder to jump the big gap ,and it probably burnt the coil out.Funny must have been going on for allittle while she would hiccup every n9w and then but no codes or dash warning. Thanks for all the help Stu ,Still don't know what's Heet? Dennis
