Front Suspension

Post by rickmeister »

Dear All,
My 2015 R1200RT suffered a major fluid leak in the LHS front shock. I only do about 5,000 Km per year and thus, have it serviced annually by a BMW technician who comes to your house to do the servicing. Anyway, last August, he noticed that the RHS top of the front fork was "weeping" with a light dusting of fork fluid. He advised that the seals should be replaced. Anyway, 2 attempts later he eventually managed to replace both LHS and RHS seals (at great expense to me!) So...big 7 day ride planned, down south to Victorian Alps. Went for a 350Km "shake down" ride to test the new suspension. About 90Km into the ride, the windscreen, instrument, my visor were all covered in fork fluid. The LHS fork seal had blown. The big ride is a week away, and I'm not in a position to do the work myself. The mobile techo bloke said he could do it on the Friday before the big ride. I also went to my local BMW people, who advised that they could do the job, but what they do is remove the forks completely and send then to a third party fork "specialist" for repairs, but would not be done before the planned departure of the Big Ride.

After much cogitation, I decided to go down that path, not to take the risk of the original seal replacement attempt failing again whilst bopping along the Victorian high country.

So, the main reason for this epistle, have any of you out there in RT land have had similar issues with your front forks. Be keen hear your views on the matter.
